What is a basenji?

A basenji is a barkless, sleek coated, wrinkle-faced, and curly tailed breed with prick ears. Basenjis used to be kept as pets for the pharaohs of ancient Egypt after which they became hunters for native African tribes, and nowadays they are bedwarmers for modern westerners.

The basenji is an elegant breed with a feline love of cleanliness and the gracefulness of a small gazelle. They are very fast and durable, but also extremely comfort-loving, which means that they usually sleep in their owners' beds.

A basenji is a temperamental, self-assertive and even proud dog that lacks any willingness to serve or please his owner. For an active dog-person who appreciates independence and challenges, a basenji is a perfect choice.

Due to the primitive character of the breed basenjis tend to have strong hunting and territorial instincts and this means that they should only be allowed to run loose in a fenced area.
