Things to remember when buying a basenji

First, you should read a lot of books on dogs so that you would become familiar with the basic facts about dogs. Then you should try to find out as much as possible about basenjis by interviewing basenji breeders and owners. You could also try to meet some basenjis. Then, finally, you should believe all the peculiarities and every advice you are told about the breed - they are all true!

Hunting instinct

Basenjis are hounds with strong territorial instincts. Basenjis are also independent, which means that they should only be let loose in well-fenced (or otherwise absolutely safe) areas. Far too many basenjis have been hit by a car, so new basenji owners are not warned in vain. Still, basenjis should be allowed to run loose from time to time as they love running, but remember to check out that the area is safe. On the other hand, thanks to this strong hunting instinct, basenjis make excellent dogs for lure coursing and track racing.

Territorial instinct

Basenjis tend to have a very strong territorial instinct, which manifests itself in that basenjis do not accept other dogs within their own territories. This does not mean that basenjis are aggressive, but rather that they have a strong territorial instinct. This is why basenjis need to become accustomed to other dogs from a very early age. Basenjis do not have to accept that other dogs come and smell at them. Still, they will have to accept having other dogs close by. This is especially important at dog shows. Basenji puppies tend to accept other dogs better than grown-up dogs.

Aloofness

Basenjis can be reserved towards everything that is new to them. This is understandable when we consider where they originate from: in the jungle every new and strange person, animal or object is a potential threat. A basenji puppy should not be kept in too much isolation from the outside world, but puppies must be made familiar with normal household sounds and strange people, situations, and surroundings. Puppies must also get used to being handled - having their teeth examined, their nails clipped etc. Also remember that you should never give in to a puppy, even though it would scream, or try to frighten you by growling or snapping at you. Puppies will just have to learn that they cannot get their own way. That basenjis tend to be reserved often makes them also aloof towards strangers.

Basenjis alone at home

Though basenjis do not bark, they are not mute either. Basenjis can howl when they feel abandoned, so it is very important to teach them to be alone at home. This should be started immediately after the puppy has arrived.

To conclude, a reminder that the breeder of your dog is always willing to help you in all problems that may and will come along the way. Just contact the breeder as soon as possible!
