The breeding committee
email: <jalostus (a) basenji.fi>

The main aim of the breeding committee is to further careful breeding of basenjis in Finland. The main emphasis is on basenjis that would be both physically and mentally healthy dogs with also characteristic and balanced structures. This breeding consulting needs to be unbiased and also to be carried out solely with the breed’s best interest in mind. The breeding committee can only recommend something as the main freedom of choice, as well as the responsibility, ultimately lies with the breeders. The committee always consists of four members, all experts of the breed and of genetics. Also, one registered basenji judge acts as a member of this committee, and it is this judge who also carries out all offspring evaluations.

The committee functions very actively and in co-operation with the breeders. It is noteworthy that nearly all puppies attend the club’s offspring inspections and that nearly all breeders apply to the committee for a recommendation in the use of their basenjis for future breeding.

Ms. Päivi Salomäki <paivi.salomaki (a) basenji.fi> acts as chairman for the breeding committee.

The training committee

The training committee organizes ring training classes to young puppies and adult dogs in various parts of Finland. Puppies, in particular, benefit from attending these classes. This kind of training teaches the dogs how to behave in the ring and with other dogs. Basenjis need to find out that they are not the centre of their owners’ universe but that there are also other dogs around. Foreign judges have noted that Finnish basenjis are mostly well-behaved and this is largly due to the years of work in ring training.

Ms. Tiina Vesterinen <tiina.vesterinen2 (a) luukku.com> is the contact person in the Helsinki area. Training sessions are also organized in other parts of Finland.

The racing committee

The racing committee was established in 1997 as a consequence of more Basenjis participating in lure coursing and track racing. The aim of the committee is to further Basenji racing as a hobby and to deal with all the affairs that have to do with competitions. In May 1997 our club was accepted as a member of the Finnish Sighthound Association. From the beginning of 1998, Finnish Basenjis have been allowed to participate in official track races for sighthounds. Our club's racing committee also helps in organizing the annual club championships in lure coursing and track racing.
